Raiders on the Road
Advantage! sought very early on to tackle social isolation. Raiders on the Road was one of our very first initiatives, as we realised that we needed to take rugby to the communities in the first instance rather than expecting the communities to come to us.
This pilot initiative, which took place in the summer of 2019, was hugely successful. Advantage! coaches visited Ormsgill, Walney, Hindpool, Barrow Park, Millom and Askam. We initially engaged with community leaders and the local police to seek their support and build relationships.
Our plans for 2021 were to extend Raiders on the Road and we were awarded funding from the PCC (Police and Crime Commissioner), to target areas with anti-social behaviour. However, the pandemic halted our plans.
Thanks to collaboration with the community police, Sam Creegan and Joe Ward, based in Dalton-in-Furness, we were able to re-introduce Raiders on the Road in 2022, with a number of successful engagement and activity sessions planned during the summer, around Dalton and Askam. Many participants have since joined one of our current programmes and initiatives.
Early 2023, we secured funding to deliver a 16-week block of engagement events in Walney, in order to help tackle anti-social behaviour on the Island, alongside securing further funding from the PCC to continue delivering across Barrow, Dalton, and Askam throughout summer 2023.
