Tony Colyer
A born and bred Barrovian attending Barrow Island junior school and then Barrow County Technical School for Boys, Tony like many other young men in the 1970’s started his working life as an apprentice in the local shipyard and steadily worked his way through the management ranks specialising in Quality management attaining senior roles both here and in Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd, Glasgow during 30 years of service.
Tony also gained a BSc in Mechanical Engineering, post graduate diploma in Operations management and undertook an Executive MBA programme at Lancaster University during his employment.
In 2002 Tony left for a new experience at Sellafield Ltd still specialising in Quality management at the nuclear facility ending his time there as Head of Quality – Operations Division after 14 challenging years of commuting on the Northern Rail ‘Thunderbolt’.
Tony then went into teaching and spent 2 years at Furness College as a lecturer in Project Management and Leadership and gained the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) before deciding to retire.
Away from work Tony was a well known local footballer and played for several local successful teams including Brickworks Utd, Vickers SC, Barrow North End, Glaxo Utd and Greengate Utd. His most memorable personal successes were winning the first U12 5 a-side football competition at Holker St with ‘Duckies 4+1’, representing Barrow Boys, playing for Barrow AFC in the 1973 U18 FA Youth Cup v Oldham Ath and winning the Barrow and district penalty competition in 1976 converting 20 out of 20 penalties to become the town’s ‘Penalty King’.
A keen lifelong supporter of Barrow RL, Tony spent 3 years on the Board of Barrow RLFC 2005-2008 as Director/Vice Chairman and in 2014 was then given the opportunity to cover Cumbrian Rugby league as a matchday commentator for BBC Radio Cumbria which he still does today.
Tony has also gained other broadcasting experience at CANDO FM whilst at Furness College and most recently agreed to join the station to develop the weekly Sportzone show designed to cover all sports in the Furness area both professional and grassroots.
Tony also hosts the Sunday rock show where he gets the opportunity to play some of his favourite rock tracks.
Tony is Married to Lyn and are both Directors of the successful sandwich/pie/cake shop in Roose Road, Barrow ‘The Bake shed’.
